Can You Fit Solar Panels Onto Your Flat Roof?
In recent years, with solar panel prices decreasing and overall energy bills increasing, the temptation to buy and install them on top of and around your home has become increasingly tempting.
As
flat roof specialists, we are often asked if a flat roof is suitable for installing solar panels, and in the vast majority of cases, the answer is a resounding yes.
There is a helpful solar panel calculator available from the Energy Saving Trust to give you peace of mind, but when it comes to the roof itself, here are the considerations you should make before buying the panels and arranging installation.
Can Your Flat Roof Take The Extra Weight?
When it comes to the addition of anything to your roof, it is not just about its weight, but also the load that can accumulate due to its existence on your flat roof.
With solar panels, there are three considerations to make on this front:
- The dead load, or the baseline weight of the panel itself, the mounting setup and any additional ballast.
- The live load, which includes any temporary loads added to your roof, such as workers setting it up and their equipment, as well as the build-up of snow, rain and storm debris.
- The uplift from the wind, as stronger gales will put strain on your roof, trying to pick the solar panel up off of it.
Is The Roof In The Right Condition For Solar Panels?
Make sure that your roof is in good enough condition to take the strain of solar panels. A roofing expert will let you know if it needs replacing, but it is typically important to at least replace the lining of the flat roof if it is wearing thin.
Are You Getting Enough Sun On Your Flat Roof?
Flat roofs are not affected by facing or roof direction the same way other roof designs are, but if your roof is surrounded by tall trees or other buildings, it could cast shadows that will affect how much light you receive and thus how much energy your solar panels will generate.
