With the bleak midwinter very much in progress and the frosty winds, rain and snow starting to make themselves very known, and because of this, many homeowners and flat roof specialists are mindful of the effects the winter can have on their roof.
Over the winter months, one concern that is often voiced is the effect snow, in particular, can have on a flat roof, due to various misconceptions about properties of a flat roof, most of which are detailed in the Government’s official Building Regulations Approved Documents.
One interesting trait of a flat roof is that a strong flat roof with a snow bed on it has an added layer of insulation, keeping you warmer in winter. Flat roofs are also not entirely flat, so if they have been appropriately made, water will simply roll into your guttering.
However, if you are concerned about unseasonable levels of snowfall and its effect on the roof, clearing it away carefully with a snow shovel is an effective way to give yourself peace of mind, although be mindful of pipes and vents to avoid doing damage to your roof.
As with any other roof in winter, it pays to keep a vigil and regularly check the roof to make sure there are no pools of standing water, leaks or rips in the membrane, as these can be made worse as the years go on.
As well as this, an important part of roof protection is check and cleaning the guttrs, making sure leaves and twigs are not blocking your drains, causing melted snow and rain to have nowhere to go but into your home.
As well as this, using a de-icing product suited to the flat roof membrane your home has can help stop snow from sticking, and ensure that ice dams melt quickly, avoiding the risk of damage.
