Here are some things to do as soon as possible so you can be confident your roof will survive the harsh winter months.
Remove fallen leaves
If there are trees close to your house, it is sensible to check your roof for fallen leaves and remove any you see.
Over time, leaves will decay and become soggy against the roof tiles. This excess moisture can lead to mould and cause the wood underneath to rot.
Leaves collecting on the roof can also result in rainwater pooling, which can put pressure on the roof system if the water is unable to drain to the ground.
Fix loose tiles
It is sensible to take a look at the roof to see whether any tiles have become loose, as heavy wind could blow them off and cause further damage to the roof.
Get any dislodged roof tiles repaired as soon as possible to avoid leaks into the house, or rainwater entering into cracks and then turning to ice, which can lead to more serious - and costly - damage to the roof.
Clear guttering
Do not forget to make sure the guttering is clear of any leaves and branches too. If the gutters become blocked, this prevents rainwater from draining away from the roof, resulting in the pooling of water.
You do not want your home to flood during the coldest months of the year or, even worse, have your roof cave in, so make sure water is able to drain away in preparation for winter’s heavy rainfalls.
