We have been battered by several storms here in the UK this winter, and many homeowners will have had to mend fences and remove debris from the garden or driveway. However, one of the most vulnerable parts of the house in high winds is the roof, and yet this can be one of the most difficult places to inspect.
It is extremely important to check for any damage as soon as possible, to avoid potentially worse problems storing up for the future. Here are some tips to make sure your flat roof is in good order after the recent bad weather.
Make sure you inspect the ladder and know how to use it correctly before you begin. Don’t be tempted to walk directly on the roof, as it may not be able to withstand your load. Look for any sign of tears or cracks in the waterproofing which could be letting in moisture.
Check around the seams and seals for signs that the membrane and felt is coming away from the edge. Small cracks can be repaired with liquid EPDM, but any larger damage should be assessed by flat roof specialists.
If there are puddles of rainwater on the roof, then the drainage is not functioning properly, or the angle of the slope is wrong. This will need correcting before the water begins to saturate the substrate. If you notice damp patches or mildew on the ceiling of your property, then this is a sign that the roof is already leaking.
Even if the roof is in good condition, it is likely to have accumulated some leaves and debris during a spell of wet and windy weather. Remove any piled-up matter from the surface, and clear out the gutters and drains to ensure that any further rainfall can flow directly away from the roof.
