Flat roofs are gaining popularity among homeowners, but it is important to look after them and keep them in good condition, particularly during the autumn months when there are plenty of falling leaves and debris.
While watching the leaves turn from fresh green to crispy brown and all the colours in between can be mesmerising, having to clear lots of them from your roof will soon take some of the seasonal magic away.
This is why it is wise to trim branches of nearby trees before they start shedding in the autumn months. Any that are hanging over your roof should be chopped back, as well as those further away if your house is in a windy location.
Of course, some leaves will inevitably find their way to your flat roof, but it is important to remove these regularly, as a build-up of organic matter can result in mould and fungus, especially if they are damp. This can cause the roof materials to deteriorate and reduces their lifespan.
Therefore, it is a good idea to sweep them every few months, or get someone to do it for you, if you don’t fancy the job. After a storm, make sure you inspect the roof, as there could be branches and other bigger debris up there, as well as leaves. These can cause more damage to your roof, so you will want to get them removed at the earliest opportunity.
