Installing a flat roof extension allows for additional space for most flat roofs that can turn them from the shelter at the top of your home to a potential additional outdoor space that can add practicality and beauty to your home.
The most common use with roofs that can support it is to have an outdoor dining and entertainment area, allowing for the relaxing natural ambience of outdoor dining whilst also having a potentially beautiful view.
As well as this, they can also be used for power generation, as it is often easier to fit solar panels on a flat roof compared to a pitched one, and other units such as HVACs and heat pumps can also be fitted to the roof rather than to the side or back of the house.
However, beyond these practical uses, there is also a range of unorthodox uses for flat roofs that can make a home feel truly unique.
Rooftop Garden
With a growing number of people wanting to live in greener spaces, a proposition that has been by several architects is to develop green roofs, such as the one found on top of the Waldspirale in Germany.
A green roof is not only beautiful and unique but often has a range of practical benefits, such as improving insulation and weatherproofing, mitigating the heat island effect in urban areas and creating natural habitats for plants and animals, especially in areas where gardening space is minimal.
Sports Play Area
Flat roofs allow for play areas for sports, and the bigger the flat roof the more possibilities that are created.
Tennis has a somewhat infamous reputation for playing exhibition games in weird locations from the middle of the sea to the top of a helipad. However, the most notable rooftop they have used was on top of a department store in Paris to promote the French Open.
As well as this, Adidas Futsal Park in Shibuya has become a very popular tourist and sporting attraction, costing hundreds of pounds to play at peak hours.
